In a recent incident, Kunal allegedly made fun of Shinde by rearranging a song from the Bollywood movie Dil Toh Pagal Hai, implying that he was a “traitor” for his political realignment. Shiv Sena members sharply criticized his comments, and some leaders called for an apology.
Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister of Maharashtra, denounced Kunal’s comments as “low-level comedy” and said that although satire and freedom of speech are recognized, there are limits that must be adhered to. In response to the uproar, Shinde, who had previously said nothing, said, “We understand satire, but there should be a limit.”
Shinde, in a subtle jab at his detractors, compared Kunal’s joke to using a supari (contract) to disparage certain people. Additionally, he drew attention to Kamra’s prior contentious statements on well-known individuals, such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Supreme Court, journalists, and powerful businesspeople. Shinde said, “This is working for someone; this is not freedom of speech.”
Notably, Shiv Sena members had broken into and damaged the Habitat comedy club, where Kunal’s performance was held. Mumbai police also arrested and detained a number of party leaders for the venue destruction.
